"Hey, Marine," Jake said.

The trucker's eyes flashed suspicion as his gaze flickered across Jake's face, and then turned friendlier at the sight of Jake's military tattoo. "Been back long?"

"A while, yeah. Desert Storm. Made the Mohave look like Disneyland, you know?"

The trucker nodded. "Got that right. I was in Iraq myself. What battalion were you in?" Jake told him.

The trucker scratched the back of his neck and looked around. "Where's your rig?"

Jake grinned. "I was hoping you'd ask." He pointed to his Harley inside the garage. "No rig. Bad starter. I'm looking for a ride to Vegas. Got room in your cab for one more? It's just me and my duffel." He pointed to the small canvas bag on the ground beneath the bench.

The trucker puckered his lips and moved his mouth around while he thought. "Well, the company don't like passengers." He met Jake's eyes again, deciding.

"I'll pay for gas. At these prices, I don't expect to ride free."

When he seemed convinced that Jake was neither an escaped convict nor a man lover, he offered a quick nod. "Lemme take a leak and get something to eat. I'll be along."

Jake thrust out his hand for a handshake. "Thanks, man, appreciate it."

The trucker reached out just as an engine roared behind them. Spinning wheels crunched loose stones as a car screeched to a halt at the curb. The men dropped their hands and turned. Jake couldn't have been more startled if he'd been blindsided.

"Looking for a ride?" Marybeth grinned like a cat and lowered her sunglasses to the bridge of her nose to meet his eyes over the white frames.

"How did you know?"

She tilted her head toward the garage. "I have a genius I.Q."

Jake laughed. 'I like a woman with brains."

The trucker looked from one to the other and smirked. "Guess you won't be needin' me, then."
Jake turned back to Marybeth. "You sure about this?"

Marybeth continued to stare from beneath her sunglasses. "I want your blood oath you're not a dope dealer or an axe murderer. Or anyone else who's dangerous or creepy."

Jake lifted three fingers into the air. "Scouts honor."

"Yeah, right. You don't look like any Boy Scout I ever knew." She laughed, though, when she said it and Jake could tell she wasn't afraid of him. Excellent. Fear wasn't exactly the emotion he was looking for.

She popped the trunk and he walked to the rear of the car to toss his duffel bag inside. He came back to the passenger door and slid into the convertible. "Later, brother," he said to the trucker.
The trucker laughed. "Name's Hank."

"I'm Jake. Thanks anyway, Hank."

The trucker offered a small nod good-bye and stepped into the market.

Marybeth put the car in drive. "Ready?"

Jake took in the sight of her and grinned. "Always."
