DESERT WILD has the richest setting of any book I’ve written to date. Set in both Santa Barbara, California, and The Sonoran Desert in Arizona, I learned after months of research that the rare species of plants and animals found in America’s most hostile desert are also some of the most unusual and beautiful in the world.

Living among deadly snakes, mountain lions, and bobcats are exquisite bouquets of Desert Lavender, butter yellow wildflowers called Paper Daisies, delicate Rock Flowers that peek from mountain crevices, and countless varieties of blooming cacti. Even the symbol of The Sonoran Desert, The Saguaro Cactus, ripens with blood red fruit that is crushed into ceremonial wine by the desert’s indigenous people. 

The rarest, most exotic flower of all, The Queen of the Night, became a symbol of love inside my stand-alone desert books DESERT FEVER and its sequel DESERT WILD.  The queen blooms only one night each year and her flowers die at the first light of dawn. Only the stars enjoy her beauty at midnight and the desert air breathes her intoxicating scent. The flowers remind me of lovers who reveal themselves under cover of night. 

 
To navigate the hostile American desert and keep my hero and heroine safe from predators while seeking the mysterious Queen of the Night, DESERT WILD needed a guide. The heroine’s GPS system, dubbed “Guy,” is a powerful but endearingly kinky navigator who grants wishes. Though not exactly a genie, his satellite receiver locates whatever his driver needs most. “Guy” brings a touch of magic to the desert, where beauty and danger live in delicate coexistence.

What’s your ultimate sexual fantasy?

No, don’t answer right away. Think about it for a few minutes.

Let it roll around in your brain and gather steam.

Why? Because the question begs some internal discussion.

How far are you willing to go to fulfill it? And when you do, what’s next?

Maybe some fantasies are better when they remain just that. There’s no let-down, no regrets, no recriminations.

That’s why I love writing erotic romance. Because those ultimate sexual scenarios that tie your brain in knots when presented with reality are the perfect way to spend a few hours wrapped in a book.

When I conceived of the Magical Seduction series, I knew I wanted to explore as many erotic situations as possible. My first six stories are straight male/female, the bread and butter of romance.

But for the seventh, I wanted that ultimate sexual fantasy.

So a ménage was definitely in the cards.

As a reader, I love the fantasy presented by ménage. Two (or more) hot guys dedicated to the pleasure of one woman, how could that be bad?

In “Seduced by Two,” Nica Donato meets Tanner and Jensen Miller and, though she doesn’t realize at first what’s in store for her, she embraces the adventure. And the brothers.

As a strega, an Etruscan witch, Nica is a descendent of the once-mighty Etruscan magical civilization. She controls a powerful magic that must be kept hidden from the non-magical world. She’s also about to take her mother’s place in their boschetta (coven) and give up all notion of a normal life.

When she walks into that bar, she’s looking for a release, an escape. And finds the ultimate pleasure and the ultimate romance with two men.

That meant two hot heroes for me to create. Two strong men with very different personalities, both of whom need compelling reasons to share the same woman.

For me, a ménage is like a teeter-totter, with a man on either side and a woman balancing in the middle. It’s quite a ride when you get all the logistics worked out.

And an ultimate fantasy.

So what’s yours?

While I wrote my paranormal erotic romance DESERT WILD I imagined my hero, Sonny Wild Horse Hendricks of the Tohono O’odham Nation, and watched my heroine fall in love. My hero was strong and well-built, with a sinewy, muscular body. He was handsome, with a firm, full mouth and serious dark eyes. His long, shiny black hair hung straight down his back and his clear, smooth skin was rich as burnished copper. His passions were his photographic art, The Sonoran Desert, and Caitlyn Spencer of Santa Barbara. How he would reconcile these often conflicting desires is at the heart of DESERT WILD.

Once I had Sonny’s image clear in my mind, I began searching the Internet for pictures of Native American men who resembled my fantasy hero. Periodically over several months I scrolled through hundreds of photographs, both vintage and new, but couldn’t duplicate the character in my imagination.

That changed when I found portraits of Native American actor and model Rick Mora and saw the eyes of my fictional hero, Sonny Wild Horse Hendricks, staring back at me.

“Don’t go,” she murmured, standing on tiptoes to nuzzle the side of his neck with her nose. He smelled of raw feral sex, damp sweat and crushed linen, and the primal scents sent shivers along her skin. She inhaled him deeply, pressed the small points of her nipples against his flesh and then opened her mouth to taste him as she laid kisses against his throat. Her tongue lapped the steady rhythm of his pulse and then dragged along his collarbone, drinking him in. Her mouth found the hard muscles of his hairless chest and moved down to lick and suck the dark circles of his areola in turn. His nipples hardened inside her mouth and the pungent tastes of salt and musk wet the back of her throat. “Be with me,” she whispered against his breastbone.

“Ah,” he breathed, closing his eyes as she loved his body with her lips and tongue and stroked the silken skin on his hips with her fingertips. “I am here.” His fingers closed on the crown of her head and entwined in the layers of her hair as she dropped to her knees to bury her face against his abdomen. “Don’t you know you’re the only reason I come back?”

June is the month of the Honey Moon. If the lovers in my paranormal release DESERT WILD were driving through The Sonoran Desert, the full summer moon would cast bright light over their Thunderbird convertible and the Saguaro cactus that symbolizes America’s most hostile desert.

Caitlyn Spencer and Sonny Wild Horse Hendricks would hear the sounds of coyotes, running deer, crickets and katydids in the distance. Desert Lavender and the citrus fragrance of Ragged Rock Flowers that grow through cliff side cracks would scent the night. The blend of The Sonora’s sights, scents, and solitude would create the perfect backdrop for love.

Assuming they had enough water and shelter to avoid dehydration, vipers, and mountain lions.

Of course, “Guy,” the Thunderbird’s magical, slightly kinky GPS navigation system would guide them safely through the night. “Guy” isn’t exactly a genie, but has the power to locate whatever is needed most. He responds to a satellite system buried deep inside the atmosphere. Finding a safe, cozy spot for lovemaking beneath the light of the Honey Moon is a made to order assignment for “Guy.”

He looked up at the celestial sky. “The June moon is called Strawberry Moon or Rose Moon in modern culture. It’s also the moon of love. Honey Moon.” He wrapped his arm around Caitlyn’s waist and drew her to him. The rise and fall of her breathing and the closeness of her body filled him with peace. “In the desert, the sweet red meat of the Saguaro fruit ripens in June. The Tohono O’odham say, ‘Ha:sañ Bak’, which means, ‘The Saguaro is ready.’” We celebrate the desert flowers and the bahidaj, our desert fruit.”

He turned Cait in his arms to kiss her and tell her the truth he had waited too long to say. “I won’t leave you again, I promise.” Caitlyn smiled up at him and he saw devotion in her eyes.  He stroked her cheekbone and cupped the side of her face. “There has never been a better woman for me than you. I love you, my dove.”

At his words, she hugged him closer and buried her face against his shoulder.

I love to read and write paranormal stories, and the reason is no surprise. Growing up, my home was filled with fantasy. My father’s library was stocked with science fiction and paranormal novels, and books about alternate realities sat on the table beside his favorite chair. His taste in television ran the same as his books—Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and the occasional war story or variety show.

My father wrote poetry, was a Marine Corps photographer, and my mother was an artist who showed her paintings in New York and Philadelphia. We were a theatre family, too, so make-believe and colorful friends were everyday parts of our lifestyle.

It’s no wonder my favorite book in elementary school was Little Witch by Anna Elizabeth Bennett. I still own the yellowed and well-read copy I bought in the fifth grade. The slim paperback, now a collector’s item, holds a special place on my bookshelf and in my heart.

My paranormal erotic romance DESERT WILD is a long way from Miss Adams’ fifth grade class where I ordered my copy of Little Witch on a long, paper form marked with little black boxes. I love DESERT WILD and hope you do, too. The hero of DESERT WILD, Sonny Wild Horse Hendricks, remembers the sweet Saguaro Cactus Jam of his youth, a staple prepared from the Saguaro fruit that ripens from mid-June until July. The Saguaro is called Ha:sañ  and its fruit bahidaj in the Tohono O’odham language. The bahidaj is also used to make ceremonial wine to welcome the summer rainfall. The Tohono O’odham say, “Ha:sañ Bak,” which means, “The Saguaro is ready.”

“Gather 6 cups of saguaro cactus fruit pulp. Put pulp in a pot and add water until half of the pulp is covered. Soak the pulp for an hour and a half. Stir every now and then. Put the pot over a low flame and cook for 30 to 40 minutes. Separate the pulp from the liquid, saving the pulp. Boil the liquid very slowly (stirring all the time) until it turns into a syrup. Then mash the pulp and put through a strainer to remove the seeds. Combine the remaining pulp with the syrup until the mixture has the consistency of jam. When it looks like jam, it is jam. Do not add sugar. Serve over warm fry bread.”
