ESCAPE With ROMANCE!

Friday, September 26th, 2008

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been stressed-out about the increasingly disturbing world events. The barrage of information from the U.S. presidential election campaigns; the effects of global warming and its hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, tsunamis and typhoons; financial bailouts; war; the urgent need for clean, abundant energy sources; and a world-wide economic recession make me want to curl up on the sofa with a margarita in one hand…and a romance novel in the other.

Thank goodness we have our love of books to transport us to alternate realities. With a book in my hand I can forget about world problems for a few hours, for less than the cost of a fast food meal. What better way to spend a little money and a rainy afternoon?

If you’re anything like me, you’re a bookworm who knows that reading is the world’s greatest escape and one of its most delightful pleasures. Tucked into my sofa with a cozy afghan, I take my books hot, my margaritas chilled… and away I go.

I love the hope and promise of romance novels. What do you read to escape?

By popular request, this month’s CLASSIC HUNK is Richard Gere!

Richard Tiffany Gere was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 31, 1949. (I hope he’s an Eagles fan!)

Early in his career he starred in the original London stage production of “Grease.” In 1977 he co-starred in the movie “Looking For Mr. Goodbar.” Gere’s breakout film role came in 1980 with ”American Gigolo.” He was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actor, Drama, for his role in the 1982 blockbuster hit ”An Officer and a Gentleman.”

Richard Gere has appeared on many magazine covers including Playgirl, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and others. He was the first man to ever appear on the cover of Vogue magazine.

Breathless…  Need I say more?

Richard Gere was named “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine in 1999 at the age of 50.

He has appeared in numerous successful films including an especially busy 2002 with “Mothman Prophecies,” “Unfaithful,” and “Chicago” for which he was nominated for a Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Golden Globe Award. He trained in tap dance for five months to complete the dance scenes. Richard danced again in 2004 with Susan Sarandon in the romantic film “Shall We Dance?”

Though raised a Methodist, Gere is a practicing Buddhist and co-founder of The Tibet House. He is permanently banned from the People’s Republic of China. (As is Brad Pitt, for his performance in the film “Seven Years in Tibet.”) He campaigns often for ecological causes and AIDS awareness.

Richard Gere will team up once again with Diane Lane for the widely anticipated 2008 romantic  film “Nights in Rodanthe.”

I think Richard Gere is a perfect CLASSIC HUNK. Don’t you agree? Please leave your comments and nominate future hunks for this column!

Football is Sexy!

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Though my sunburned nose is red as a cherry tomato and my windburned cheeks will never need blush again, I feel sexy. Eagles football does that to me—especially when my husband and I snag opening day tickets for the new season, the stadium’s charged with endorphins and testosterone, and our home team wins! Eagles vs. Rams home opening score 38-3.

Football is the only cure for the summertime-almost-gone blues.

Six years ago I got hooked on football. One Sunday afternoon while the game droned on in my family room, I plunked down on my sofa and fixed my eyes on the screen. I’d watched football with glazed eyes all my adult life, mostly to pass the time in the company of fans. But I never really watched between trips to the kitchen to fix snacks or pour beer. For me, football games were merely background images and white noise.

This time was different. The first quarter ended. The second began. Suddenly, the men in (tight, butt-hugging) uniforms didn’t seem to be running around the field aimlessly anymore. The plays began to make sense. I understood the announcers. The game rules clicked into place. Player names and numbers merged. It was like I had entered a foreign country and suddenly, without effort, understood the language. And it was fun!  My hubby and I have had fun watching football together ever since.

Over the years my tastes have refined. I’ve added other teams to my roster of favorites and follow the careers of Quarterbacks like Favre, Brady, the Mannings and Romo along with Donovan McNabb’s. I wear a Brian Westbrook jersey because I think Eagles Running Back number 36 is the most talented player in the NFL.

Most of all, I like when my husband puts his arm around me at the stadium, or in front of the TV, and we have one more thing in common to cheer about. Our togetherness is worth all the sunburn and $5 hot dogs–and all the Sunday afternoon at-home pizza and beer dates–in the world.

Yes, I think football is very sexy.

Best—Adele Dubois
