A Sad Farewell To Summer

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Labor Day always makes me feel a little sad. It’s my least favorite holiday, since it marks the unofficial end of summer. Though autumn is still weeks away, leaves are already falling from the oak trees on my lawn and the evening air is crisp. Though I enjoy brisk walks around the park and the streets of my home town as the weather cools, I can’t shake the vague, nagging malaise that fills me when summer draws to an end.

This year on my backyard deck I created a warm-weather outdoor ‘office’ to write my books. This quiet place is also my reading retreat. My muse and I will miss it this winter.

Farewell, summer.

TAG, You’re It!

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

My gal pal, author Sammie Jo Moresca, (Sherry Morris at Housewife.Ink) tagged me and asked me to blog about “My Unspectacular Quirks.” I have more than six quirks, believe me, but since she only asked for that amount, I’ve listed them below. If you want more, just ask! ;)

First, here are the rules for the Tag, You’re It! game with other authors:

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. List 6 unspectacular quirks you have.
4. Tag 6 bloggers by linking them.
5. Leave a comment on each person’s blog to let them know they’ve been tagged.

Six Unspectacular Quirks About Author Adele Dubois:

1.  My hair is naturally curly. When I was a teenager I straightened my hair every day. Now I love my long curls and wouldn’t dream of straightening them.

2.  I’d rather ride in my convertible than do almost anything else. I dread winter when I can’t ride with the top down.

3.  I hate liver, lamb, and lima beans and won’t eat them in any form. Ever.

4.  My favorite form of exercise is walking. I walk in the park and around town at least three days per week. Walking is great for my muse, keeps my stress levels down, and helps me stay fit.

5.  I’ve been happily married for over twenty years. Yes, happy marriages do exist! My hubby is an ace.

6.  Almost every night I eat a small bowl of Bryer’s Light Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream. If I don’t have ice cream I eat a box of Junior Mints. Don’t know what my obsession with chocolate mint is about, but I can’t resist the combination.

Do creative types crave mint? LMK if you share my mint-with-chocolate passion. I’m convinced it has something to do with artistic temperament. Or is that temperamint?

CLASSIC HUNKS: TOM SELLECK

Thomas William Selleck began his acting career as a two-time contestant on The Dating Game in the late 1960’s--and wasn’t selected for a date either time. I wonder how many nights sleep the women who rejected him lost when they met him at the end of the show?

He next appeared in television commercials for products like Pepsi-Cola, and then landed a recurring role in the 1970’s as Lance White in The Rockford Files starring James Garner.

Tom Selleck was offered the part of Indiana Jones in Raiders of The Lost Ark, but was forced to turn down the role due to contractal obligations to Magnum P.I. The role of Indiana Jones went to Harrison Ford. Ironically, the pilot film of Magnum P.I. was delayed for six months, a lapse that would have enabled Tom Selleck to accept the part in Raiders. Several scenes of Raiders of The Lost Ark were filmed in Hawaii, where Magnum was also based.

Magum P.I. (1980-1988) was rated the #1 best detective series of all time by The Sleuth Channel in a recent show listing the Top 25 detective show favorites. Columbo starring Peter Falk won the #2 spot. Miami Vice came in at #5. (See my first CLASSIC HUNKS column for pics and info about the Miami Vice team of Crockett and Tubbs.)

Gotta’ have that beefcake shot! If you ask me, body waxing is wa-a-y over-rated. Give me a hunky, hairy-chested man anytime!

Tom Selleck has appeared in movies too numerous to list (including Quigley Down Under, Three Men and a Baby, Concrete Cowboy) and earned his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star in 1986. He had recurring roles in the television shows The Rockford Files, Friends, Boston Legal and co-starred in the latter episodes of Vegas.

Tom Selleck won critical acclaim for his portrayal of Dwight D. Eisenhower in a 2004 History Channel movie.  At age 63, Tom is still hot–and busy with acting projects, including his recurring made-for-television movie role as Paradise Police Chief Jesse Stone.

I think Tom Selleck is a perfect choice for this CLASSIC HUNKS column. Don’t you agree?

HAIL, AUGUST!

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Snow in August? No, the white stuff you see on the deck of my house is hail. Golf and moth ball size hail fell for half an hour during a morning system of severe thunderstorms and torrential downpours that continued throughout the day in eastern Pennsylvania. We lost power for nearly two hours. (Ack! No Internet access!) Thankfully, power was fully restored, but the intense storms mixed with hail continued. Summer sun has become a dim memory. For those of us who love summer, this year’s rainy season has been a serious disappointment.

Twelve Things I Love About Summer

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

June and July slipped into August before I was ready, and, suddenly, I feel the need to savor each day before Fall tinges the air. Summer is my favorite time of year. Here’s my list of what makes summertime special:

Riding in my convertible with the top down.

New episodes of Burn Notice and The Closer, the best shows on summer TV, and two of the best of the year. (P.S. –Just discovered The Cleaner starring Benjamin Bratt. What a cool show! I’m hooked!)

Reading books in my back yard.

Summer fruits and vegetables like strawberries, blueberries, peaches, sweet corn on the cob, cantaloupe, watermelon.

Barbeque (We barbeque almost every evening at our house).

Starbucks Mocha Frapuccino’s and Rita’s Coffee Ritaccino’s.

Bryer’s Light mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Long walks in the park. (Gotta’ walk off those fraps and that ice cream!)

Breakfast on the patio.

Trips to the beach. (The beach is my favorite place to be.)

Day trips to the casino. I love to play the slots! (Darned internet spiders will probably fill my email box with casino gambling spam after that admission.)

Wearing flip flops, toe rings, and painting my nails with shiny blue polish.
