WOLF MOON JANUARY
Thursday, January 17th, 2008January is the month of the Wolf Moon. Though this Medieval English term is used most often in our culture to describe the January full moon, other names have been used over the centuries. The Celts dubbed it Quiet Moon, Neo Pagans the Ice Moon, Chinese the Holiday Moon, Colonial Americans the Winter Moon. Tribes of Native Americans called the January full moon Cooking Moon (Choctaw), Cold Moon (Cherokee), and Moon of the Terrible (Dakota Sioux) among others.
People across the world celebrate each full moon by watching its glow from mountaintops and open fields. Across the United States there are organized wildlife hikes, astronomy clubs, photography groups, musician parties, gatherings at Audubon centers, poetry readings, and fire ceremonies that include singing and drumming to welcome the full moon’s light.
The full Wolf Moon will arrive Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at sunset.
Below is a stunning photograph of a January Wolf Moon found on a blog site called Beyond The Fields We Know by photographer Catherine Kerr (KERRDELUNE). Isn’t it beautiful?
If learning about the moon and stars is of interest to you, there are enthusiast groups in many communities across the country. The Internet also provides a wealth of information for study. One of my favorite sites is Keith’s Moon Facts, where some of the information provided in my moon blog articles is found.
Here are a few fun tidbits from Keith’s Moon Facts about the moon:
–The moon is not round, but egg shaped, with the large end pointed toward earth.
–The full moon always rises at sunset.
–It takes a rocket ship 60-70 hours to fly to the moon.
I’ve included an interesting recipe from My Dish, What’s Yours? for Moon Rocks by Tom Savage, described as a cross between a biscuit and a cake. Serve these with a hot beverage on the night of the Wolf Moon and celebrate!
