GOOGLE INVADES YOUR HOME AND PRIVACY
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007An author friend posted a warning on my local writers’ group chat loop about a feature Google offers that I think is worth repeating, and I hope readers will take seriously. This is not a hoax. Check it out as soon as you finish reading this message and see for yourself.
Google has created a search program that enables anyone to discover your full name, address, AND A MAP TO YOUR HOUSE simply by typing your home phone number into the search bar at www.google.com/ I entered my home phone number and, sure enough, all of my personal listing information with a map to my house popped up. My blood ran cold, let me tell you. If this isn’t an invasion of privacy I don’t know what is.
If you have an unlisted home telephone number or use a cell phone as your primary means of communication you probably don’t need to worry. But if your home phone number is listed in the telephone directory, and if you and your children give out your home number for routine calls, Google probably has your home information listed on their search engine.
By typing in your telephone number on the Google search bar using dashes to separate the numbers (ie:)123-457-7890 and clicking Search, your personal home information with a map to your address will appear.
To block your Google listing after it loads, simply click on your telephone number and fill out the REMOVE form. It took Google 48 hours to remove my listing. My mind rests a little easier now, though I’ve come to the realization that privacy on the Internet is an oxymoron. A sad truth.
